The second tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Barry, was to make landfall June 20 in Veracruz, Mexico, bringing heavy rains and potentially life-threatening flash floods. The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said that at 1200 GMT, Barry was located about 30 miles (45 kilometers) northwest of Veracruz and moving westward at about three miles (five kilometers) per hour. The storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 miles (75 kilometers) per hour, was expected to cross just northwest of Veracruz before moving inland over southern Mexico during the day.
