The Legitimate Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela states its solidarity with the Government of Ukraine and its citizens in the face of the unfortunate realization of a unilateral action of intervention by the Russian Federation against this country after the illegal recognition of the so called “governments” of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as the violation of the Minsk agreements. Furthermore, we reject and ignore these supposed “republics” controlled by Russia and we demand respect for the right of each people to choose their own destiny autonomously.

Despite the great efforts undertaken by the great democratic nations of the world to avoid an unfortunate scenario of confrontation in the midst of the difficult times that our world is going through, the Russian government has opted for the path of coercion and violence to attack a sovereign nation. This is a fact that must be unconditionally repudiated by all of us who consider ourselves democrats, confronting global authoritarianism in all its forms.
What happened in Ukraine should call us to reflection in each of our nations. Democracy is a precious value that is being systematically threatened by those who do not tolerate a plural system of justice and opportunities. Today, Venezuela is also a victim of these abuses by the enemies of freedom, as our tireless struggle to recover democracy continues.
Faced with this complex panorama, it is the responsibility of all the governments that make up the free world to respond and confront this and every threat to sovereignty and freedom with determination. From Venezuela, the legitimate government will continue advocating respect for diversity of thought, freedom and institutionality, as a guarantor of the principle of self-determination of the peoples, and democracy as fundamental banners of the nation and the world that we want in the years to come.
